The Story of VTL’s Wotan Reference Amplifier

Wotan is the powerful mythical character from Wagner’s ‘Ring Cycle’ opera. In the opera, Wotan, as the ruler of the gods, commands authority and obedience from those he ruled. Feared and loved, contriving and wise, just and self-serving, Wotan embodies the full antithesis of many human attributes. Wotan’s signature music throughout the opera is stirring and majestic, with predominantly deep bass strings, depicting the many facets of a mighty, complex being.

We at VTL created the Wotan MB-1250 to capture the quintessence of power and authority in an audio amplifier. Our Wotan is also the hero who fears nothing, who strives to reproduce the purest tonal color, and the most refined nuance that recorded music has to offer. The mighty Wotan amplifiers can take control of the most demanding loudspeaker load and thunder out deep bass with the authority of a mighty ruler, while at the same time handling the delicate passages with speed and nimbleness of a youthful hero.

VTL has put the current version of the Wotan MB-1250 Reference amplifiers into production since 1998 – the Wotan is probably the most powerful tube amplifier in continuous production in the world high-end audio industry.  An awesome demonstration of the Wotan's unsurpassed power was setup for Hi Fi '98 in Los Angeles where we used 3 pairs of Wotans in a triamped system with the Martin-Logan Statement speaker systems.

As in all of our Reference models, the Wotan MB-1250 is constructed as a double-chassis design, with a power supply on the lower chassis and the amplifier on the upper chassis, and the two layers connected to each other with an umbilical cord. The power supply of the Wotan consists of five power transformers, all positioned inside a custom made transformer box with the 5 transformers floating inside thick elastomer material, aimed to isolate vibrations from the power transformers from the sensitive input stages.

The On/Off power switch of the Wotan is a two stage turn-on switch, required for the huge current draw that the amplifiers demand from the wall outlet, and to get the most from the amplifier, a separate 30 Amp line for each amplifier is highly recommended.

The Wotan amplifier chassis holds the circuitry to the heart of the amplifier, with a total of 24 tubes per monoblock, and the famed VTL wide-bandwidth Signature Output transformer. All capacitors in the signal path are MIT multicaps, and the amplifier is stable down to 2 ohm loads. Each output tube can be individually biased from the top deck of the amplifier. The amp can be used with either balanced or single-ended inputs. A switch in the back easily controls switching between tetrode and triode mode.

Weighing a hefty 245 lbs. per monoblock, our Wotan MB-1250 is not for the faint of heart. For those who make the journey to experience what these unique amplifiers have to offer will be well-rewarded with a listening experience that will stir their souls.
